Cast of Apathy:
This section will give a brief description of each character, and their backstory. I don’t know who’s going to read it because it seems to me the best way to learn this would just be to read the comics, especially considering that anything I write here is subject to change until I reference it in a comic. So, here, for those of you who like Apathy enough to want to learn about it, but not enough to read the archive, is the cast listing. Note: Not one of these characters is based on any of my friends (although some of the situations in the comic are from real life).
Jack Carter: Jack is a cynic. He doesn’t suffer fools gladly, and his favourite way to not suffer fools is to make sure that the fools suffer instead. He is very loosely based on me (though he uses an iMac, so it’s not a strong connection), in the vague hope that someone attractive will one day say to me “You know who you remind me of? Jack from Apathy,” and I can say “Yes, I know; I write Apathy”, although in real life what is much more likely is that I will end up with a girl called Sarah who, despite every comic being archived and dated automatically by Butch, will think I’m making fun of her in the comic. I should have given her an obscure name, I suppose.
The surname was revealed in April ’05, after a brief discussion about what it may be, Bauer being the favourite, and Davenport a close second. (With Clarke and Alexander for Sarah’s.) In fact he was eventually named after a sort of ex- of mine, Sam. Not really an ex-anything-in-particular, mind, because nothing very much happenned there. But on the rare occasion that I think about her*, I think of her more as an ex- than as a friend. Maybe if I thought about her more I would have thought that through better. I chose that name purely because I think it sounds quite good.
Sarah: I really don’t know what to say about Sarah yet. She’s a nice enough girl, she’s been going out with Jack for about eight months (I just made that number up), but I haven’t really decided that much of her personality. That probably means that she's going to say the things Jack would say if he was more based on me and less mean (than I am), so I suppose if I was a cartoon character a little tiny Jack and Sarah would appear on my shoulders every time I was faced with a moral dilemma, and that might make things very uncomfortable, since they're dating and all. I’d feel like a giant third wheel. Nobody wants that. It further occurs to me that this has not been a massively useful description.
Gary: Gary is... Gary... Well, suffice it to say that Jack does not suffer Gary gladly, but has to. I think, at the moment, that Gary is Sarah’s brother. He might turn out not to be, of course, because I’m not going to restrict myself in the comic just to preserve the integrity of this page, when I can change this page and pretend it never happened, but I think he is. Furthermore, he fancies Nikki. I also think, for now, that she likes him too but again that could change at any moment. Nothing’s going to happen there, though. This isn’t Friends. I have one couple already, and that’s enough to do couple jokes.
Nikki: Nikki was lumped in an apartment with Jack when they started university, and they’re pretty much stuck living together until the lease runs out, which, of course, it never will because this is still not Friends and I’m not having them move house all over the place. Besides which if they did move out, I can’t see Jack choosing to hang out with her anymore. Nikki has an annoying habit of believing everything spiritual, phophetic, or any of the other crap Jack is too intelligent to believe but not politically correct enough to respect. Nikki keeps rearranging the living room furniture. This is never mentioned in the strip, of course, but it explains why the chairs never seem to stay in the same place between strips. We know Nikki is 21.
*By which I mean, whenever someone makes me watch Stargate SG1
